Frequency Specific Microcurrent
What is it?
Frequency Specific Microcurrent is a physical therapy treatment that has been in use since the early part of the 20th century. Microcurrent produces a current in microamps, which is a millionth of an amp. By comparison a TENS unit or low volt electric stim unit produces current in milliamps, which is 1000 times greater than a microamp. Your own cells make current in microamps.
How does it work?
Microcurrent works by helping your cells to produce more energy, increase protein synthesis and increase waste product removal. Studies have shown that microcurrent increases energy production in your cells by 500%. When the cells have more energy, greater protein synthesis and increased waste removal they can repair damage caused by inflammation and scar tissue and heal much more quickly.
Once the tissue is changed and stable it is able to stay in the healthier con- figuration with proper nutrition, diet and lifestyle choices. Many studies have been performed on microcurrent all over the world, including the National Institute of Health. Microcurrent has been found to decrease inflammation within 30 seconds of application, heal nerve injuries, speed healing time and decrease complications from burns, and has extremely positive effects on Parkinson’s disease, neurotransmitter balance and a whole host of musculoskeletal complaints.
In our office we apply the frequency to your tissues by wrapping the electrodes in warm, moist towels and placing them in areas that will provide for the greatest concentration of frequencies through the affected tissues. The electrodes are graphite gloves that conduct electricity. The reason that they are gloves is because many practitioners use microcur- rent while doing body work at the same time. They wear the gloves, applying the frequencies and manual treatment simultaneously. Another thing to note is that you will not feel the frequencies. This is because the current is so low it does not stimulate sensory nerves.
Precautions: This therapy is not for use with women during pregnancy, or if one has a cardiac pacemaker. Otherwise microcurrent has few, if any, side effects. There are some condition specific precautions, as with any therapy. Patient hydration increases efficacy. Microcurrent does not work optimally if the person receiving it is not hydrated. The current does not penetrate or resonate with the tissues sufficiently if a person has not had about a quart of water in the two hours prior to treatment. Please keep this in mind if you are considering this modality as part of your care.
